What Is Rattan?

At Rattantan, our passion for rattan dates back decades. We’ve spent years perfecting the craft of handmade rattan furniture, bringing timeless designs to homes across the world. But what exactly is rattan, and why is it so beloved—not just by us, but by interior designers and homeowners alike?

At Rattantan, one of the reasons we love rattan so much is because it’s one of the most sustainable materials available for furniture manufacturing. Around 80% of the world’s rattan resources grow naturally in Indonesia, close to where we produce our furniture. The Indonesian people often say that “rattan hugs the rainforest”—both literally, because rattan vines grow by wrapping around trees, and figuratively, because rattan production helps protect the rainforest ecosystem.

Rattan is one of the world’s fastest-growing natural materials. It regenerates fully in just five to seven years and can reach lengths of up to 100 meters. Additionally, it plays a role in carbon capture, absorbing CO₂ and generating clean air. In fact, rattan produces up to 35% more oxygen than a typical tree. And because it’s harvested by hand using traditional methods, it’s an incredibly low-impact process that supports both environmental health and local communities.

The Craft of Making Rattan Furniture

One of the most remarkable things about rattan is how easily it can be worked with—yet the craftsmanship involved is anything but simple. After harvesting, the rattan vine is steamed for just 10 to 15 minutes, making it pliable and ready for shaping. At Rattantan, we rely on skilled artisans who use only a few basic tools to handcraft every piece, ensuring each item is unique.

We focus only on the highest quality types of rattan—specifically, Tohiti and Manau. These varieties are known for their strength, consistency, and workability, making them perfect for furniture that’s as functional as it is beautiful. Rattan can be left in its natural state, what we call “skin-on,” or it can be stained and finished. We proudly use only toxin-free varnishes to keep our furniture eco-friendly and safe for your home.

A Timeless Choice for Any Home

Choosing rattan furniture means embracing both style and sustainability. Its natural warmth, organic texture, and graceful curves bring life and comfort into any room, whether you’re furnishing a sunroom, a dining area, or a cozy reading corner. And with its incredible durability, rattan furniture becomes not just part of your décor—but part of your story.
